Mobile phone app stole private data from millions
San Francisco – A free application that allowed users to change the background image on their Android smartphones actually stole private data from as many as 4 million people and transmitted it to China, security experts have revealed.
The so-called Jackeey Wallpaper app surreptitiously transmitted the phone’s Internet browser history, mobile phone number, every single text message and voicemail password to a website based in Shenzhen, China.
The security breach, which is one of the most serious ever to hit the smartphone market, was revealed at the Black Hat security conference by mobile security firm Lookout, according to reports on technology websites Thursday.
The threat was limited to phones running Google’s Android operating system, which allows any third party developer to place applications in the Android marketplace for users to download. Full story

The end of the bleep on US television?
New York – A single breast has the power to occupy dozens of attorneys for years — that is if the breast belongs to Janet Jackson and was seen for a few seconds live on US network television.
TV network stations and broadcast watchdogs have been arguing about the incident which happened almost seven years ago. Now a New York court has handed down an important verdict: curse words may be used again on US network television.
In 2004 Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performed at the Super Bowl in Reliant Stadium in Houston and were seen on television by 90 million people. Twenty-three-year-old Timberlake tore open Jackson’s costume and exposed her right breast during the act.
The breast was visible only for a few seconds but Nipplegate, as the incident came to be known, has been occupying the time of TV network companies, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and practically the entire broadcast industry since then.
Jackson and Timberlake denied the incident had been planned and put it down to a “wardrobe malfunction.” However, they never managed to convince everyone. Some thought it was no coincidence that Jackson’s costume tore off cleanly to reveal a pierced breast just as Timberlake sang the lyrics “I’m gonna have you naked by the end of this song.” Full story
Saudi king and Mubarak discuss Palestinians, Lebanon Eds: Starts new cycle
Cairo – The first leg of the Saudi king’s tour of the Middle East began in Sharm el-Sheikh with a meeting with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak which focused on Lebanon and the Palestinians, state media reported Thursday.
Mubarak, rumoured to be ill at age 82, held the late night talks Wednesday with King Abdullah, himself 85-years-old, at the Sinai resort town, without any obvious outward signs of failing health.
The one-on-one talks were said to have lasted an hour, according to state media. The stagnated Middle East peace process, the status of the Palestinians and the Lebanese, along with bilateral relations between the two key Arab states were the main items on the agenda. Full story
